How to be an effective teacher?

In this blog I am presenting questions that I have for my cooperating teacher, future students, and virtual mentor team. They are focused on being an effective teacher, not just an efficient teacher.

Identify three questions from reading:
1) For your future students and/or future school administrators

Students, what adaptions to the lesson make it easier to understand the content (i.e. real world examples, theory, and/or hands on activity)?

2) For your cooperating teacher and/or university supervisor

What are Solanco’s overarching objectives for the agricultural education department? What is the overall goal for completer students of the agricultural education program?

3) For one of your current virtual mentors (be specific!) and/or your cohort

Hannah Harris, did you go through an induction program at your school district?

  1. Hi Luke!
I sure did. The year they hired me was the first year they extended it to a 3 year program that met once a month. At first it was a great time to learn about the school, have engaging discussion and get ideas for more engaging lessons. After 2 years the administrator running it left so of course there was change. I felt left behind and didn't feel like it helped in the last year. I believe every school has to have some type of induction process you have to complete as part of your permanent certification.

  2. Any time you back content with experiences or give them the experience to tie it to it works really well. I really like the learning labs that Ohio State Extension sells, they have a lot of useful info and interactive posters. The plant one I can use in Intro, Plant Science and Landscaping. In a smaller district we had a one day orientation and then the Nebraska Ag Ed Association assigns each new teacher mentor to help throughout the year.
